doing both an open call and submitting a video isn't a bad idea is it?

No, I have done both before... It is good for them to see you in the "live" casting call because they can see how you react to the "live" camera and crowd. It is easier to film yourself at home and edit it than to be exposed to the live camera and a real person asking you the questions.

Speaking of a casting call... here is one coming up.
Auditions for the classic reality series ‘Survivor’ are being held at the Mall of America this Saturday, and it’s up to you, dear Minnesotan, to audition, make the final cut, and show what natives of the Land of 10,000 Lakes are capable of.
The casting call will take place in the Mall of America rotunda from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 15. One must be a legal U.S. resident over the age of 18 to participate.
According to City Pages, show runners for ‘Survivor’ are looking for candidate who are strong-willed, outgoing, adventurous, physically and mentally adept, adaptable to new environments, and have interesting lifestyles, backgrounds and personalities.
Jesse Ventura seems like an obvious candidate.

IDAHO FALLS, Idaho -
The casting call for CBS' hit show "Survivor" is happening at Bish's RV Super center in Idaho Falls, on Friday. The event begins at 10 a.m. and will continue till 4 p.m. Those wanting to audition will need to come prepared with a 60-second skit to prove why they should be on the show. Bish's and CBS ask that you come to the audition with all paperwork complete.

several open calls so far...wonder if they watched them already or not. By the way, how do some make their audition tape under 30mb?

Use a video editing/compression software to compress the video. You lose video/audio quality but it is still watchable.

Well, I am not sure if it will open up when the premiere airs or if it waits a bit... I think they get busy in November, so I assume sometime in October the light will be green... and time to apply again. Yes, I think the sooner the better... they are casting 2 seasons at once and if this run of second chancers produces good ratings, then they may just go that route again... so... that means that they are only casting one show, and I bet they already have about 8-10 people lined up for it... so send it in early.
